GAG: any device placed in or over the mouth, either partially or completely, designed as a restraint system to prevent speech or to muffle verbal sounds. Certain designs hold the mouth open rather than closed. Varieties include the cleave gag, ball gag, ring gag, rope gag, mouth gag, mouth bit, pump gag, funnel gag, spider gag, tape gag, and utility gag. Most gags utilized in BDSM muffle a submissive but cannot completely eliminate vocal sounds. The use of these devices carries an inherent risk of airway obstruction or choking, and practitioners should exercise caution. The term also is used to describe the physiological reflex of choking or retching.
GANG BANG: a sexual act involving multiple males and one female, or any group sex encounter with significantly fewer females than males. The term also refers to the dynamic where several participants of any gender engage in sexual activity with one central participant of any gender. See related ORGY. GASLIGHTING: a popular term for a form of psychological abuse in which false information is given to the victim, designed to disorient and cause doubt in their own perception of events. A form of abusive mind control often brought on by isolating the victim so there is no one else that can dispute certain situations. The term was coined directly from the 1944 movie Gaslight starring Ingrid Bergman, where a husband uses this exact manipulation on his wife. The movie itself was adapted from an earlier 1938 British play called Gas Light. The word is used loosely in modern times and can also refer to any mental abuse of any kind by a dominant to a submissive in the BDSM realm. GASPING: see EROTIC ASPHYXIATION. GASPER: one who engages in gasping or breath control. See EROTIC ASPHYXIATION. GATES OF HELL: a male chastity device consisting of several metal rings connected together and placed around the penis to prevent an erection. It is designed to become very painful if the wearer becomes aroused. Some devices also contain a small rod to be inserted in the urethra, adding to the pain. See related CHASTITY CAGE.
GAY LEATHER: see LEATHER COMMUNITY. GEAR: any item or device used in a BDSM activity. Toys, tools, and instruments are also terms for gear.
GENDERFLUID: a person who identifies as a mix of both male and female, feeling more male on some days and more female on others. GENDERQUEER (GQ): a person who identifies as neither male nor female, a gender that is outside of the simple binary norm. The term also applies to someone who identifies as being a person of the opposite sex on the inside, while being sexually attracted to the same sex that they were born. For example, a woman who feels she is a man inside a woman's body and finds other women attractive. She is not simply gay, which is a woman attracted to another woman, because she identifies as being male. GENITORTURE: inflicting pain on the genitals. GERMAN: a code term for sadomasochistic activities. An old guard or leather community code word used to distinguish BDSM activities from other sexual activities. GIMP: the original term is an offensive slang name for a physically handicapped or lame person, or a feeble or contemptible person. In BDSM, the term gimp refers to a gay male submissive, or someone who frequently wears a gimp suit. Even within a BDSM context, the term is sometimes used in derogatory ways. GIMP MASK: a tight-formed hood, often made of leather, rubber, PVC, or spandex, which entirely encloses the face and head. It often lacks openings for the eyes, mouth, or ears.
GIMP SUIT: a bondage suit made of stretched leather, PVC, rubber, or spandex, designed to cover the body completely, fitting closely to the skin, often including anchor points for bondage. It sometimes has an attached hood, or gimp mask. Some gimp suits have longer-than-arm-length sleeves similar to a straitjacket, restraining the arms in similar positioning.
GOLDEN SHOWER: a term for the act of urinating on a person. See WATER SPORTS. GOOD PAIN: a term used to describe a desired pain by the receiver in a BDSM exchange. A pain that a person perceives as pleasurable, the opposite being bad pain, which is unwanted or too much pain. GOREAN D/s: an elaborate system of rules and social structures adapted from the fictitious society in the Gor novels, a series of science fiction books written by John Norman. Cult followers of the novels have created an online role-play society with elaborate storylines and computer-generated animation. Other followers have taken a lifestyle approach, adopting some of the philosophies depicted in the books. These people call themselves Goreans. While those who pursue a Gorean lifestyle do not always consider their practice to be BDSM, their incorporation of a 24/7 power exchange generally places them within the BDSM subculture. Those who live this lifestyle and identify it as BDSM refer to their practice as Gorean D/s.
GO WORD: an uncommon term for a code word used to resume a play session after it has been stopped by a safeword. Many believe a session should not stop and start frequently; instead, once a session has stopped, a return to play should occur only after discussion and space to clear one's head. Gowords allow the submissive to top from the bottom, which is often seen as an unwelcome practice. See related TOPPING FROM THE BOTTOM. GREEK: a code term for anal sex or anilingus. GROPE BOX: a long, enclosed piece of bondage furniture with multiple openings along the front, in which a person is bound to be groped, poked, or fondled. Sometimes found in fetish clubs (mostly in Europe), a person is placed inside to face the humiliation of being groped by strangers.
GROUP MARRIAGE (POLYFIDELITY): a form of polyamorous marriage, also sometimes called poly-exclusivity. In this arrangement between more than two people—usually three to six adults—all partners live together and share finances, children, and household responsibilities. All adults in the family are sexual partners. Different terms exist for the various types of polyamorous group marriages. See related POLYAMORY, POLYGAMY, or PRIDE FAMILY. GUN PLAY: the practice of including firearms as props in BDSM activities. Replica guns and similar props are sometimes used in rape play. Using actual firearms—even if unloaded or loaded with blanks—is not recommended in any BDSM play and should be considered highly dangerous for obvious reasons. A single mistake with gun play can cost someone their life.
GYNARCHY: any form of political, governmental, or social system ruled by a woman or women. In BDSM, it is sometimes used in the context that all females are superior to all males. Some people refer to the BDSM community in general as a gynarchy.
