IMPACT PLAY:
any activity that involves an impact, such striking, hitting, flogging, whipping, etc.

IMPALEMENT:
a practice in which a person is bound and penetrated with a dildo, usually attached to the end of a rod or pole.  Usually practiced as a way of being able to have sex with a play partner safely without the exchange of bodily fluids.

INDUSTRY or THE INDUSTRY:
refers to BDSM scene as a whole.  See BDSM COMMUNITY.  Also refers to the adult entertainment industry, especially BDSM pornography.

See BDSM PORNOGRAPHY.

INFANTILISM:
a type of role-play in which a person takes on the role of an infant child known as an adult baby.

See related AGE PLAY, DIAPER PLAY or ADULT BABY.

INFIBULATION:
in the context of BDSM, it is a term for a temporary chastity piercing, often on men.   See CHASTITY PIERCING.   The actual definition of infibulation is the surgical modification of the male or female genitals for the purpose of chastity.  Throughout history, many cultures and religions have adapted some form or another of infibulation with great controversy. In males, it can range from suturing the foreskin over the head of the penis to complete removal of the penis.  In females, it includes the practice of cutting the clitoris and labia, which is intended to remove any chance of sexual enjoyment, and then stitching together the edges of the vulva to prevent sexual intercourse.  Most people outside of certain religious sects view the practice of mutilating the genitals for the purposes of imposed chastity as barbaric and inhumane.  Infibulation practices in BDSM should be temporary and safe.

INFLATION:
an unsafe practice involving injecting saline solution into the scrotum of a male to enlarge it and cause discomfort.  Less common forms of inflation practices include injecting the saline into other parts of the body, which is considered to be less dangerous yet still risky.

INFORMED CONSENT:
permission granted with the knowledge of the possible consequences.  Consent cannot be considered valid unless the person giving consent has complete knowledge of possible risks and benefits of what they are giving consent to.  This includes consensual non-consent relationships.  Any BDSM activity that does not disclose all circumstances before permission is given is not considered consensual.

INVERSION TABLE:
a piece of bondage furniture to which a person is bound, consisting of a flat table that is suspended between supports on a pivot, so that the person can be inverted upside down. The person is then flogged or sometimes brought to orgasm.  As blood flows to the brain from being held upside down, it can intensify these activities.  This can also be dangerous, as it could cause the bound person to lose consciousness.  Inversion tables are sold for exercise purposes, and can easily be converted to bondage furniture.

IRONS:    see LEG IRONS.

ISOLATION HOOD:
a hood designed to isolate a person, rendering them unable to see or hear, used for sensory deprivation.

Also see BALL HOOD.
