JAPANESE BONDAGE: any intricate style of bondage, usually referring to shibari, that uses deliberate geometric patterns and specific rope placement to bind a person. See SHIBARI. 
JATO: a slang term for the final, intense moments of fast, vigorous physical thrusts leading directly to orgasm. Sensory perception and pain thresholds are significantly altered during high arousal immediately prior to climax, increasing the risk of unintended injury. Care must be exercised when engaging in impact or physical play during this window. The term originates from the military aviation acronym JATO (Jet-Assisted Take-Off), which describes the rapid acceleration generated by auxiliary rocket units on an aircraft. JOCKSTRAP FETISH: a fetish focused on the wearing of jockstraps, or the strong odor from previously worn jockstraps. The term also refers to a practice in which a submissive man wears a jockstrap (sometimes with a cup guard) to prevent penile stimulation while undergoing anal penetration. 
JOI: (pronounced "joy"), an acronym for Jerk Off Instruction; a form of play in which a dominant gives step-by-step instructions to a submissive on how to masturbate, including pace and vigor. This often includes directions to pause to enforce orgasm denial. This dynamic is most often found in professional dungeons with professional dommes. JUDAS CHAIR (JUDAS CRADLE): a medieval torture device consisting of a high, pyramid-shaped seat typically made of wood or metal, whose sharp tip pierced a person under the weight of their own body, causing a long, painful death. This is one of the many medieval torture devices that do not translate to play and should never be used for consensual BDSM. A less dangerous variation of the Judas Cradle was a standard chair containing small, sharp spikes on the backrest and seat. This is the version that is sometimes found in BDSM dungeons. Even this version should be used with great caution. JUSTINE: the name of the central character in four controversial novels, beginning with "Justine, or The Misfortunes of Virtue" (1787), written by the Marquis de Sade, the French author from whose name the word sadism was derived. It is sometimes used antonomastically for a masochist, though the character in the books would be considered a victim rather than a masochist. See related MASOCHISM and SADOMASOCHISM.
