NAGAIKA: variant spelling: nagyka, also called a kamci, a short whip, similar to a quirt, made of thick leather strips, originating from the Nogai people, a Turkic group from the North Caucasus region. The nagaika does not have a fall and the striking end is often heavy. Which is why it is considered to be a heavy impact implement, unlike a quirt that tapers to two falls that whip a target. Often the name given becomes the submissive's scene name or alias. See related SCENE NAME. NEEDLE PLAY: an activity in which needles pierce the upper dermis of a person's skin. Often these needles are placed in elaborate designs, sometimes adorned with ribbon, body paint, feathers, and flowers. Needle play has grown in popularity in recent years. Blood is almost always a part of this sort of play, which is why it is considered edgeplay. The piercings of the needles are not permanent, and the items are usually removed after the play session has ended. See related BLOOD PLAY. NECK SNAP: the term for the action in which a person involuntarily jerks back her/his head in response to a forceful strike, which can cause neck injuries similar to whiplash. NEWBIE: a newcomer to BDSM. Sometimes the term is used as a derogatory term, as though one's worth is measured by BDSM experience and popularity. This often creates an unhealthy atmosphere for all involved and makes the newbie's journey to a true spiritual knowledge of BDSM difficult. NEW LEATHER or NEW GUARD: a BDSM community starting in the late 1980s, which abandoned many of the strict protocols of the old leather BDSM community. The new leather communities welcomed heterosexuals, women, and lesbians who were interested in BDSM. See contrast OLD LEATHER, and see related LEATHER COMMUNITY. NIPPLE CLAMP: any clamp that is designed to clamp onto the nipple. Clover clamps, tweezer clamps and adjustable alligator clamps are the most popular nipple clamps used in BDSM. Nipple clamps have a limited time that they can be worn, usually no more than 10 minutes or so. If blood circulation to the nipple is cut off for a long period of time, there is a risk of temporary or permanent nerve damage. NIPPLE TAPE: any tape, usually electrical tape, placed on the nipples; often worn in fetish clubs during play as a way for a female to expose her breasts and still adhere to certain censorship regulations. NOMARETINE or NOMARET: a person who believes in and lives the lifestyle of nomaretism. See NOMARETISM. NOMARETISM: a type of 24-7 BDSM philosophy and lifestyle called Nomaret. Taken from the Greek root word "nom-" (nomos) meaning arrangement, law, order, and the Greek root word "aret-" (arete) meaning virtue. Those who live the Nomaret lifestyle call themselves Nomaretines or Nomarets. Nomaretism is based on the philosophy that sadomasochistic power exchange relationships between a dominant and submissive are natural, innate in all living creatures and should not be considered perverse, kinky, or indecent. Instead, nomarets believe that what is considered normal in most modern societies regarding vanilla sex and marriage is the true perversion from what is natural. NONCONSENSUAL or NON-CONSENT: a BDSM activity that is not sanctioned by either party. Such activities are not considered BDSM, and are instead regarded as assault, abuse, rape, maltreatment, or some other deplorable action. See BDSM ABUSE . NOSE HOOKS or NOSE SHACKLE: a set of hooks, about an inch long, inserted into a person’s nostrils. The hooks are usually attached to a string or chain, causing torture to the nose. When pulled, it forces the person’s head up. This is sometimes held in place by a harness to keep the nostrils extended, making this torture device a form of bondage. NOSE TORTURE: a Japanese form of BDSM that often involves nose hooks. NURU MASSAGE: a technique where a person, usually female, massages another person by way of using her entire body to rub against the other person while both parties are completely nude, usually with a massage oil called Nuru gel, which is made from the leaves of the brown seaweed plant. Most often Nuru massages are finished with a sexual act. This practice is a well-known massage practice associated with prostitution, a favorite in many massage parlors around the world.
