RACE PLAY:
a form of role-play in which one person assumes the role of master and another assumes the role of submissive or slave, in a setting where the participants' race is relevant to the power exchange. It encompasses any play that gives focus to the racial makeup of the participants. The term is also used by pornographic websites to describe sex involving people of different races or nationalities, or it may refer to role-play that involves wearing uniforms associated with a particular hate group.

See related UNIFORM PLAY.

any type of consensual role-play in which participants stage a mock rape for the sexual gratification of everyone involved.

See FORCED SEX PLAY.

a flexible strap made of thick leather or canvas, used to sharpen and polish the blade of a straight razor or knife. Throughout its history, the razor strop has also been used for corporal punishment because of its thick leather and thudding strike.

REFLECTO PORN:
a form of exhibitionism in which a person is photographed naked or engaged in a sexual act via a reflection in an object, such as a window or a teakettle. It is a method of introducing sexually explicit content hidden within an image that is not initially recognized.

RELIGIOUS PLAY:
any role-play or BDSM activity involving religious themes. It is frequently Catholic-themed, involving declarations of repenting for sins and accepting punishment. Participants in such role-play often report feelings of emotional release and spiritual cleansing, drawing parallels to the historical practice of self-flagellation performed by certain religious sects.

See also related CILICE and SPIRITUAL BDSM.

RESISTANCE PLAY:
any mutually consensual activity in which a person puts up a struggle while being overpowered by another.

RISK AWARE CONSENSUAL KINK (RACK):
a philosophy that certain BDSM activities carrying inherent risk, or stretching beyond traditional definitions of safety, are permissible as long as all participants are fully informed and aware of those risks. It stands in contrast to the Safe, Sane, and Consensual (SSC) framework, which emphasizes strict adherence to activities deemed safe and sane.

See SAFE SANE CONSENSUAL (SSC).

RITUALS:
a task or series of actions performed by a submissive on a regular basis within a D/s (Dominance/submission) relationship, as established by the dominant partner. Unlike a general protocol, which sets a rule or expectation, a ritual is specifically defined by its repetitive, structured execution at set times (e.g., a submissive kneeling each morning to recite a pledge). The terms protocol and ritual are often used interchangeably, though a ritual specifically emphasizes the repeated practice itself.

See related PROTOCOL.

ROD:   see CANE or BIRCH ROD.

ROISSY:
a code word or slang term for a dungeon, derived from the fictional estate featured in Pauline Réage's 1954 erotic novel Story of O.

See related O (O-PLAY) and DUNGEON.

ROLE-PLAY:
any activity in which participants assume defined roles or personas during a BDSM session to act out a specific scenario. In a broader sense, the term is sometimes used to describe all BDSM activities, as power exchange fundamentally involves taking on distinct roles (such as Dominant and submissive).

ROMAN SHOWER:
the act of vomiting on another person for sexual gratification.

ROPE BUNNY:

See SHIBARI and SUSPENSION BONDAGE.

RUBBER:
a material used in various BDSM implements, known for delivering a sharper, more intense sting than natural materials like leather. For example, rubber falls on a flogger produce a harsher, more painful impact than traditional leather falls. The term rubber also commonly refers to latex or rubber garments worn in fetish fashion.

See related LATEX.

RUBBER FETISH:     see LATEX & PVC FETISHISM.

RUBBER FLOGGER / WHIP:
a category of impact toys where the falls or tails are made of rubber or latex rather than leather or rope. Due to the material's high friction and lack of give, rubber floggers deliver a sharp, intense surface sting often described as a burning or biting sensation. Models made of thick rubber strips produce a heavy, punishing impact, while Koosh floggers (constructed from thin rubber strands) deliver a highly localized, scratchy sting.

See KOOSH FLOGGER.
